The Rapid Response Committee of the Academy of Medicine Specialties in Nigeria has called for immediate action to address the ongoing Mpox outbreak in African countries. In a recent statement, the committee urged the Federal Government to establish a national advisory task force on Mpox.

The Academy’s recommendations encompass a range of measures to combat the outbreak. These include increasing surveillance and rapid response to new cases, improving public awareness campaigns, and engaging communities in response efforts. The committee also stressed the importance of mobilizing resources for affected healthcare systems, enhancing research on Mpox epidemiology in Africa, and prioritizing the distribution of Mpox vaccines to at-risk populations.

As of August 25, Nigeria reported 48 confirmed Mpox cases out of 868 suspected cases across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory. In light of these numbers, the Academy emphasizes the critical need for a coordinated response to protect public health in Nigeria and across Africa.
