On July 31, 2024, the Dental Section of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria held a landmark public awareness symposium and essay competition. The event focused on the critical theme: “Integration of Oral Health into the Primary Health Care System of Nigeria.”
The symposium featured presentations from esteemed professionals in the field. Prof. Azeez Butali, Professor at the University of Iowa, spoke on “Oral Health: Mirror of the Body, Relevance to PHC.” Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director/CEO of NPHCDA, addressed the “Oral Health Agenda in the NPHCDA: The Strategies, Resources and Networks.” Dr. Idris Bashir, Registrar/CEO of CHPRBN, presented on “Operationalizing Oral Health in PHC: What are the Requirements of the CHPRBN.” Dr. Gloria Uzoigwe, Director of Oral Health Services at FMOH, discussed the “Oral Health Agenda in Nigeria: The Gains and the Pains with Special Reference to POHC.”
In partnership with the Nigerian Association of Dental Students (NADS), an essay competition was held alongside the symposium. We are pleased to announce the winners: Divine Amiewhule, Dada Funsho, and Oluwanjunse Israel. Congratulations to these bright minds for their insightful contributions!
The event was graced by representatives from various international organizations and institutions, including USAID, World Health Organization (WHO), International Association for Dental Research (IADR), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Colgate, and the Health Minister for Ireland. This diverse group of attendees highlighted the global significance of integrating oral health into primary healthcare systems.
The symposium served as a platform for robust discussions on strategies to improve oral health care accessibility in Nigeria. It emphasized the importance of collaboration between various stakeholders in achieving this crucial goal. We thank all participants, speakers, and guests for their valuable contributions to this important dialogue. Together, we are working towards a future where oral health is an integral part of primary healthcare in Nigeria.
